The challenge {mission impossible theme plays in my head} was to create a nursery that had to double as a guest room, have some whimsy - but not be too baby-ish, have space to enjoy the love of music and reading, find creative uses for storage but be warm and inviting for both baby and guests!
SO, after COUNTLESS emails and MANY Skype sessions – we’re done!! Why only emails and Skype, you ask? Oh – well, I should probably mention that my sister lives about 3000 miles away! And since hopping on a plane for a few months to help her shop and design wasn’t really an option, WE DID IT ALL ONLINE! Let me tell you, it was quite the experience – but worth every second! So, without further ado, here are the before and after photos of my nephew’s new nursery!
{BEFORE}
{Like the keyboard set up? My brother-in-law is a professional musician. I guess he’ll have to find another space to compose!} ;o)
{AFTER}
{Can you believe this is the SAME wall?}
{BEFORE} Unfinished dresser…
{AFTER} Orange dresser! Kudos to my sis for trusting me & taking that leap of faith with orange paint!
{PS – my sister added the leaves. I’m a simple, clean line kinda girl, and wasn’t sure about the leaves at first. What do you think?} :)
Above the dresser – I saw that printable on Pinterest and recreated it myself! I actually made 4 different printables for the room! I'll be posting a couple of them on my {brand spankin'} new Facebook page soon! So, be sure to "Like" Shaped by Grace on Facebook to get yours FREE! {Thank you friend!}
{BEFORE}
{AFTER}
This ottoman below doubles as storage {and I just can’t seem to get enough of that owl pillow!}:
These handmade wall pockets can hold anything from little infant toys to books!
This whimsical trash can will soon be in the room to balance the orange dresser. {Ever try to mail a trash can? You should. It’s fun.}
A soft & shaggy rug with space for baby to play!
Vinyl tree wall decal:
We both fell in love with the alphabet wall hanging in this pic! And I {hope} she is falling in love with her new nursery! xo
Remember how I said we lived 3000 miles away? Well, I have never actually seen this room in person before or after! {Maybe one day!} So, decorating it proved even more of a challenge. I want to thank my sister for executing the design, her patience in sending lots of pictures, giving me a webcam walk-through and allowing me to text her a bazillion questions, fabric swatches & paint colors! Since she was making 100% of the décor purchases online, much of the inspiration came from searching ideas we had online, project nursery, and Pinterest. From all these searches, I created a design board for her on Pinterest; you can see the inspiration board I created for this nursery here.
And here is where we found all the items for the décor:
- Wall paint: Pistacchio (a soft green)
- Dresser paint: Disney's Donald Duck Orange
- Dresser: Ikea
- Crib/Furniture: my sister already had these
- Owl pillow: SkipHop.com, $20
- Little Tree Bedding set: Walmart, $175
- Printables inspired by sycamoretreepress.com and recreated by me. {Keep checking my blog & Facebook page! I made a couple of my own printables for the room & will be posting it for you for FREE next week!} ;o)
- Rug: $40 Wal-Mart
- Book slings: Homemade – about $4-5 each.
- Trash can: Target, $2.50. Iron on decal, $2.99
- Love: FREE!
Of course, I can’t let you leave this post without sharing a picture of the happy couple and my super cute sister & mom-to-be!
I miss you sis! I sure hope the little guy likes his new nursery, because this is what I think of him already -- even though we’ve never met:

ReplyDeleteSo fantastic! What a wonderful, dual function space you 2 created! We know how you feel about living away from your sister and how hard that can be. But you guys did such a great job collaborating and I hope you will get to see that room (and your nephew!) soon! :-) Thanks for sharing this at Inspiration Friday!

how very lovely, what a lucky baby :)
ReplyDeletei LOVE it!!! It has become the most peaceful room in the house and I love to just sit in there and read in the mornings w/ a cup of tea and a good book. This is one spoiled baby and he isn't even out of the womb yet.
ReplyDeleteBTW, does this count as your first e-makeover? You did a great job. Especially since I'm really bad at decorating and gave you no help except to say "that's too hard, make it easier; make it more functional; where can i store stuff; that's too pricey, can we find it cheaper?; you want me to go to Target? in NYC? no thanks - where can I get it online?!; You want me to go Walmart? I don't have a car - where can I get it online?; An orange dresser? really?" and you did it ALL!!!!
NICE WORK :) I'm luck to have a sister who goes the extra mile (or 3000 miles) for a kid she hasn't even met : )
Love you!
Beautiful and well done!

super cute - you did great all remote! We are doing owls in my new baby boy's room also! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the owl pillow and the tree decal!! Also the leaves on the dresser make it a little more artsy which is cute (and easy enough to change in the future for an older kid) :). I've just started following your blog, check mine out sometime if you get time :)
ReplyDeleteFound you from the link party at Sugar Bee, such a gorgeous long distance make over! I am also loving that owl pillow! I'm a new follower, pop over and visit me some time :)
