{Faux} Etched Window

I’ve been making lots of little updates to my house since we first moved in. One of the first changes I wanted to make was with my kitchen window. It opens to a small courtyard area that 5 other neighbors use to enter their homes. (I know! That’s a lot!) I knew that fact moving in and most of the time the courtyard entry makes me feel safe knowing people are so close by. But, one of the drawbacks is people walking by could look right in my window and see my whole house. (Hey, what if I wanted to leave dishes in the sink?) ;o)

Here is what my window looked like BEFORE – with the empty courtyard view and empty, plain window panes:

And after some searching, what I found was actually a really simple solution: add a window film that doesn’t allow people to see in, yet allows light to shine through!
I knew I couldn’t etch the glass myself so I searched and found a lace faux etched glass film at Home Depot! It cost $19.95 a roll (on sale!) and I used two rolls. I cute the edge of the film to fit the size of my window, moistened the window with a damp cloth (so the film would adhere to the glass) and then spread the film carefully with a flat edge.

I primarily used the application tool that came with the film, but I also used this scraper and actually a credit card for the corners! They all worked great! I would compare this to putting up wallpaper in that you don’t want any air pockets or bubbles, but if you use enough water on the window and are a patient straightener, it’s pretty easy! I chose the lace scroll patterned etching and I LOVE the result!!

I love how the window looks at night too!

Now I leave my window blinds up all the time! :) Thanks so much for reading! I hope you like this short & sweet window makeover! xo

I love it! This is one of the project I want to do in our window next to our front door. Would you believe it like almost 40 bucks here in Canada (also Home Depot)? I need to find a cheaper solution. It's great you found it on sale.

I am a new follower. Thanks for dropping by in my blog and follow too.

This is such a great idea. I love that it offers privacy without being transparent! Great tip!

I love this stuff! I've never used it by my sister had it on her bathroom windows and it was so cute!

I think I am going to do this to our front closet. For some reason, there is a set of french doors on it. Lets just say my closet is always messy and I don't want to look at it!

I really like this idea. I think it may work in our bathrooms. The windows are a little lower than I like and we are always having to close and open the blinds.
